Jesus and the First Christians

Three groups had answered Rome three ways. A teacher from Nazareth gave a fourth answer, and it outlasted the empire.

Lesson Goal

Students will place the life of Jesus in its Roman setting, explain how his teaching answered the question of living under Rome differently from the Zealots, Sadducees and Pharisees, and describe the first church in Jerusalem.

Key Vocabulary

Apostle
One of the twelve followers Jesus chose and sent out to teach.
Parable
A short story Jesus told to teach a lesson.
Crucifixion
Rome's cruelest punishment, death on a cross, used for slaves and rebels.
Pentecost
The Jewish feast when the apostles began preaching and the first church grew.

Teaching Suggestion

Read Mark 12:13-17 aloud together before the lesson's turn. The trap in the question, and the way the answer steps out of it, is clearer read straight from the Gospel.

Where This Goes Next

U1-L8 follows the church out of Jerusalem with Paul, and into the persecutions under Nero.

The word cards are at the top of this page. Look back at them as often as you need, then answer.

When you finish: write the answers out in your own words — not copied word for word from the choices. Saying it your own way is the part that proves you understood it. Then use Print Answer Sheet for a one-page record of what was answered and scored.
