The Master of Disguise

An octopus has no bones, no shell, and no claws worth fearing. In an ocean full of sharks, eels, and hungry seabirds, that sounds like a losing hand. Yet octopuses have survived for millions of years, and their secret is not strength. It is deception.

The skin of an octopus is covered with millions of tiny sacs of color called chromatophores. Each sac is ringed by a set of muscles. When those muscles pull, the sac stretches wide and its color spreads across the skin. When they relax, the color shrinks to a dot and disappears. An octopus can flood its whole body with red, brown, or yellow in less than a second, faster than you can blink.

Color alone would not be enough. A flat patch of brown on a rough coral reef would still stand out. So an octopus also changes its texture. Small bumps in the skin, called papillae, can rise and flatten on command. Within moments a smooth arm can become as rough and spiky as the rock beside it.

The strangest part is what the octopus does not have. Every experiment so far suggests that octopuses are colorblind. They have only one kind of light-detecting cell in their eyes, while humans have three. An animal that cannot see color is somehow matching color better than any painter.

Researchers are still arguing about how. One leading idea is that octopuses "see" with their skin. Scientists have found light-sensitive proteins, the same kind found in eyes, scattered across the octopus's body. If that is true, an octopus resting on a stone may be sensing that stone's color through its arms rather than looking at it at all.

Camouflage is only the first line of defense. If a predator spots the octopus anyway, the animal has a second trick: it fires a cloud of black ink and jets away. The ink does more than blind. It carries a chemical that dulls the predator's sense of smell, so even a shark tracking by scent loses the trail.

None of this makes the octopus safe. Most species live only one or two years, and many die shortly after reproducing. But for a soft, boneless animal in a hard ocean, disappearing has proven to be a better strategy than fighting.
