Stem-and-Leaf Plots: Homework

Split each number into a stem and a leaf, keep the empty stems, and read the plot.

Doing it on screen?Tap or click a box and type your answer. When you’re done, press Check My Answers at the bottom of the sheet.

Part A — Stems and Leaves / 5

The tens digit is the stem and the ones digit is the leaf. A single-digit number has a stem of 0.

Part B — Reading a Plot / 5

Use the plot to answer. The key is 6 | 4 means 64.

Part C — Spot the Mistake / 4

Each problem has a mistake in it.

Part D — Real Numbers: The Elements / 6

The noble gases and the halogens are two families on the periodic table. These are their atomic numbers, and they are real.

Part E — Critical Thinking / 2

Write your answer in a sentence or two.

Done? Check your answers.

Wrong ones turn red, so you can fix them and check again. Your answers save as you type, and your score goes on the lesson page.

Answer key

Part A — the answers.

  1. 8
  2. 0. A number with no tens digit has a stem of 0.
  3. 52
  4. 1, 2, 3, 4
  5. 8

Part B — the answers.

  1. a. 13   b. 53, which appears three times.   c. 86.   d. 44   e. 53

Part C — the answers.

  1. 4. The repeated 23 needs its own leaf.
  2. 2 and 3. Empty stems stay on the plot.
  3. Answers vary. The reader can't tell whether 3 | 8 means 38, 3.8 or 308.
  4. Answers vary. The leaves should be rewritten in order from least to greatest, or reading the median and the mode gets much harder.

Part D — the answers.

  1. a. 9   b. 4 (the 20s, 40s, 60s and 70s)   c. 3.   d. 11   e. 35, the 6th of the 11 values.   f. No mode. Every value appears once.

Part E — one correct answer, and what a good explanation says.

  1. Answers vary. One that works is 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 52, 55, 58, 59, 63: the 3 and 4 stems are empty.
  2. Answers vary. A stem-and-leaf plot is better for many different two-digit values, since a line plot would need a long number line with mostly one X at each spot, and the stems group the numbers while keeping every value.

The tens digit is the stem, the ones digit is the leaf, and every empty stem stays on the plot. Copyright © NexEdge Studios
