Line Plots: Homework

Find the range, build the number line, count the Xs, and spot the outlier.

Doing it on screen?Tap or click a box and type your answer. When you’re done, press Check My Answers at the bottom of the sheet.

Part A — Range and the Number Line / 5

The range is the greatest value minus the least. A number line has to reach both ends.

Part B — Reading a Plot / 5

Each row of the table tells you how many Xs are over a number.

Part C — Spot the Mistake / 4

Each problem has a mistake or a trap in it.

Part D — Real Numbers: The Days of the Week / 4

Count the letters in the English name of each day. The table is real.

Part E — Critical Thinking / 2

Write your answer in a sentence or two.

Done? Check your answers.

Wrong ones turn red, so you can fix them and check again. Your answers save as you type, and your score goes on the lesson page.

Answer key

Part A — the answers.

  1. 18
  2. 50
  3. Least 7, greatest 15.
  4. 9 (20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60)
  5. 11

Part B — the answers.

  1. a. 12   b. 2, the tallest stack.   c. 6, far from the rest.   d. From 1 to 3.   e. 3 (two 3s and one 6)

Part C — the answers.

  1. 3. Every value gets its own X.
  2. 2. It is far below the others.
  3. No. Unlike a line graph, a line plot only needs to reach the least and the greatest value.
  4. Answers vary. Every number from the least to the greatest stays on the line, even the empty ones, or the plot gives a false picture of how far apart the values are.

Part D — the answers.

  1. a. 3   b. 6, which appears three times.   c. 2 (Thursday and Saturday)   d. 9, Wednesday.

Part E — one correct answer, and what a good explanation says.

  1. Answers vary. One that works is 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 30: the cluster runs from 5 to 8 and 30 is the outlier.
  2. Answers vary. Both show how many times each value shows up with a stack, but a line plot stacks Xs over a number line, so it shows the exact values, while a bar graph usually shows categories with bars.
