Teaching note — marking words the McGuffey way

McGuffey’s revised Readers printed marks so a student could sound a word out instead of memorising its shape. These cards are plain on purpose — mark them by hand, in front of your student, as you teach each word.

How to use them. Hold up a card and have your student sound it out, then write it three times in a row while saying each sound. Work the stack through the week. On the last day, print the Weekly Spelling Test and read the words aloud to test what stuck.
